So, here’s the thing about creating a ‘non-toxic’ nursery - yes, there’s a lot of fear-mongering out there about toxic chemicals in our homes.
However, there is also growing evidence showing that indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air, microplastics and forever chemicals (pfas) are showing up in our bodies, and babies’ rapidly developing bodies are more vulnerable to harmful substances.
And unfortunately, many of the items we bring into our homes and the rooms of our teeny-tiny babies are made with these harmful substances.
To be clear: I’m not a super-granola mom. I believe in doing the best we can with the information we have, making values-based decisions, and choosing sustainably - for the planet and me.
And hey, I grew up sleeping in a lead-painted room, drinking formula warmed in plastic bags (anyone remember those or am I dating myself?), chewing on who-knows-what plastic teethers, and snoozing under flame retardant treated blankets.
And so far (knock on wood), I’m doing alright.
But the truth is, our risk for disease is shaped by a mix of genetics and environmental exposures. And the world today looks very different than it did when we were babies.
We’re seeing increasing concern around microplastics, forever chemicals (pfas), VOCs and other pollutants that are creeping into our water, soil, and air.
And when it comes to synthetic toxins, not all exposure is the same. Some chemicals can irritate the skin or trigger allergies right away. That’s short-term exposure. Think of things like air fresheners, laundry detergents, soaps, or certain cleaning products that give you a rash or a headache.
But other effects may take time to show-up. Long-term exposure, even of small amounts, can mess with things like hormone balance, immune function, or neurodevelopment, especially in babies whose bodies are still forming.
This doesn’t mean every dust particle or off-gassed whiff could lead to a health concern, but it does mean that minimizing repeated exposure, especially during critical developmental windows, is a smart and science-backed approach to supporting your baby’s long-term health.
Small changes could make a big difference over time. That’s why our family tries to limit our exposure to harmful substances at home and to choose products that don’t add more pollution to the planet our kids will grow up in.
And that comes down to re-thinking the why and how of being a consumer.
Before we even talk products, here's the lens I bring to every nursery purchase:
Here's what nobody tells you: "All-Natural," "Eco-Friendly," and "Hypoallergenic" mean absolutely nothing. There is no legal standard behind any of those words. Companies can and do slap them on anything.
The certifications that actually mean something require independent testing and verification.
Here's a quick cheat sheet so you know what you're even looking for:
Mattress or crib: GREENGUARD Gold, GOTS, GOLS (for latex), MADE SAFE
Fabric, bedding, or clothing: GOTS or OEKO-TEX Standard 100
Foam furniture or a glider: CertiPUR-US
Any baby product broadly: MADE SAFE or EWG Verified
A great place to start (& end if you want!):
Everything else is a bonus. I mean that.
This can all sound overwhelming.
I remember that feeling so well. And so I’ve done the research so you don’t have to.
It’s the guide I wish I’d had when I had my first baby.
I spent hours doing this research so you don't have to. The No B.S. Guide to Your Non-Toxic Nursery covers every product category - mattresses, furniture, bedding, diapers, skincare, cleaning products, and more - with:
It's practical, it's honest, and it doesn't require a trust fund.

Because you deserve to walk into that nursery feeling informed and at peace - not overwhelmed, burned out, and second-guessing every single thing you just registered for.
With love, Carissa
